United Living attend launch of Sheffield City Council’s Building Block programme
An innovative training programme aimed at helping unemployed people gain construction skills has been launched in Harborough Avenue, Sheffield.
Hannah Prankett, Business Development Coordinator at United Living, attended the event and said: “Building Blocks is a programme where those who are unemployed can learn new skills such bricklaying, plastering, painting and decorating. This hub has classrooms where you can learn the theory and then an outdoor area where the practical skills can be put into practice. Candidates gain their CSCS cards there and all the H&S knowledge needed for site. The successful candidates who have attended every day with a positive attitude towards working will then go on to work with contractors for work experience. We are extremely proud to support such a wonderful initiative and look forward to seeing the fresh talent that it produces.”
MP for the Manor Castle Ward Terry Fox was in attendance for the ribbon cutting ceremony, who is an advocate for vocational learning in one of the most deprived wards in the city. Matt from Barnsley Construction was on site and allows the candidates to work with them to gain experience. A successful individual from this scheme is Ellie Revell who has completed the programme and is training to be a qualified bricklayer with Barnsley Construction.
Hannah said: “I had a chat with Ellie who was originally training to be a hairdresser until an operation made her stop and think about what she really wanted to do. She decided she wanted to be a bricklayer and went through the Building Blocks programme to gain the experience needed. She now works for Barnsley Construction who have welcomed her into the building industry and are pushing her every day to strive for her goal. She is determined to be successful and has even thought about going into management in her later years.”
The Sheffield City Council Building Block programme has been running since January 2019.
