New affordable homes boost Darlington community

A new partnership between United Living New Homes subsidiary Partner Construction, North Star, a not for profit housing association and Darlington Council has resulted in a boost to affordable housing stock in Darlington.

Community investment and sustainability are key drivers behind completion of the 15 new homes at The Garth, Cockerton Green, with a further five due to complete in March 2021. With local demand for affordable homes high, Homes England provided a £600k grant to help the development meet an exceptional level of quality and design.

The 2-3 bedroom homes have been created with families in mind and provide plenty of space, modern kitchens and bathrooms, private gardens and parking, as well as energy efficiency which exceeds required levels.

Graeme Walton, Construction Manager at Partner Construction, said: “We are proud to support North Star in its ambitious plans to build at least 500 new homes by 2023. Our experience in this sector means that we have been able to support them with a full turn-key solution from sourcing and acquiring the land, right through to the design and build of the homes themselves.

“The new homes that we have constructed form part of our first project together and we very much look forward to working closely with the delivery team to help North Star meet the regions housing needs.”

Angela Lockwood, CEO of North Star said: “We are committed to building high quality homes for affordable rent across the area to help meet local demand. These homes are evidence of how great partnership working can make a difference to local people and communities. The £2m development cost was assisted by grant funding from the Government Agency Homes England who provided around £600k grant making the scheme deliverable and affordable. North Star invested the remaining £1.41m.”

Councillor Kevin Nicholson, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for health and housing, said: “I am delighted that once again North Star has provided a further 15 much needed family homes in Darlington for affordable rent. This development is particularly welcome at such a central location in Cockerton Village, close to a wide range of local amenities and facilities.

“Unfortunately this site has been standing empty for some considerable time and was looking quite neglected, so it is great to see such a good quality housing scheme improving the overall quality of the area.”

The successful delivery of this scheme highlights the complimentary values that both United Living New Homes and North Star hold, with a focus on positively impacting the communities in which they work.
