Upgrading critical UK water infrastructure

Supporting the UK's sustainable energy system

Sembcorp Energy UK appointed United Living Infrastructure Services in December 2020 to carry out major water mains diversions as part of the early works for Sofia offshore wind farm, known as ‘Dogger Bank’, which, when complete, will be one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world.

One of the largest offshore wind farms in the world

Sofia offshore wind farm is situated on Dogger Bank in the middle of the North Sea, more than 190 kilometres from the North East coast. The total amount of power Sofia will likely generate is enough to provide almost 1.2 million average UK homes with their annual electricity needs.

Once operational, the energy generated by Sofia’s turbines will save more than 2.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions* per year compared to using fossil fuels in the UK.

Delivered on time and within budget

Our extensive knowledge and experience working on highly complex, major infrastructure projects across the UK meant that we were the natural choice for this project.

In addition to the pipeline diversions, work included water pipe installation, chlorination, and pressure testing. Utilising our engineering experience, the project team also installed reinforced concrete thrust blocks to restrain the forces from flow change in the pipe installation area.

At its peak, 16 direct staff members were working on the Sofia project. Two from the United Living Water division of the business delivered the plastic pipework’s electrofusion welding, with the rest from the United Living Energy division utilising their experience in heavy civil works to carry out the deep excavations, trenching and ditching of the pipework.
