The Challenge

FES delivered precision engineering and construction to divert a 450mm VHP Gas Pipeline for Wales & West Utilities to facilitate the diversion of the A465 Heads of Valley Trunk Road.

Due to the works being a small part of the A465 works carried out on behalf of The Welsh Assembly it was critical that Key Milestone dates were achieved as any delays would impact on the larger programme of works.

All works were carried out safely with zero LTI’s / NLTI’s, on time and to budget.

The Solution

As part of the upgrade of the A465 Heads of the Valleys Trunk Road, it was necessary to divert VS001 – Gilwern to Hafodyrynys 450mm High Pressure Pipeline through the Cwm Clydach gorge. The pipeline was laid down the steep sides of the gorge and across the A465, Heads of Valley road. The tie-ins were carried out by means of a stopple and bypass arrangement.

The project created many challenges such as working in close proximity to Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and open cut crossing of the A465, a major artery for traffic within that area. The most challenging aspect from both a health and safety and technical perspective was the installation of the new pipeline down the north and south embankments.

The Impact

FES provided project management, commercial management, Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality management, document control and operational teams to divert the pipeline and tie into the existing. All works were carried out safely with zero LTI’s / NLTI’s, on time and to budget.
