Gaining New Skills for a Future in Construction

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we sat down with Craig Lloyd, an Apprentice Site Manager in Property Services, to learn about his path into the industry and hear about his experiences during his apprenticeship so far.
Why did you choose the apprenticeship route? Did you look at other options?
I was previously working in an operative role, driving plant machinery, and I felt I had reached the highest position I could attain within the company. During a conversation with my manager, he mentioned some potential job opportunities and spoke of his previous experience with United Living. That conversation led me to explore career options, and when I checked the United Living careers page, I saw an apprenticeship opportunity for a Site Manager role. It immediately appealed to me as a chance to change my career path and improve my skills. Although I had considered apprenticeships in other fields, such as HGV driving, I realised it wasn’t the right fit for me. When I came across this apprenticeship, it felt like the perfect opportunity to make a change and better myself.
What advice would you give to someone (or their teachers/parents) about how to find and apply for an apprenticeship?
My advice would be to explore all the options available and not to be afraid to ask questions. United Living offers a range of apprenticeships at various levels, so it’s important to find the one that aligns with your interests and goals. The Gov.uk Apprentice page is also a great resource for exploring opportunities. Don’t hesitate to reach out for advice, whether it’s from the company or your support network, to better understand the route you’re taking. Embrace opportunities to learn and progress!
What Level and what apprenticeship standard are you working towards?
I’m working towards my Level 4 Site Supervision and Management with an HNC. So far, I’ve completed several assignments, achieving three distinctions and one merit and I have four more assignments to go.
How is your apprenticeship training delivered to you by your training provider?
I go to Longbridge College once a week for face-to-face classes, which gives me the chance to interact with other people on the course. We also have quarterly meetings with the college and my manager to review progress and discuss our experiences over the past few months. This structure has really helped me stay on track and build a solid understanding of the course material.
How have you developed and progressed in your role since starting your programme?
Since starting my apprenticeship, I’ve gained a much deeper understanding of the construction industry, both through my training and day-to-day tasks. My confidence has grown significantly, and I feel much more prepared to handle responsibilities. One area I’ve particularly improved in is health and safety, which is essential in my role. Not only has this helped me feel more secure at work, but it’s also given me the knowledge to tackle DIY projects at home with greater confidence.
Can you describe your typical day in work?
No two days are ever the same! I’m currently working on an SHDF (Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund) retrofit project, where I’m responsible for ensuring that work is carried out safely, on time, and to a high standard. I manage the documentation and ensure that processes are followed correctly. I enjoy the variety of challenges I face every day, and I’ve learned a lot from solving problems and finding solutions on the go.
Do you find your apprenticeship experience supportive? Who supports you, and how?
The support I’ve received at United Living has been incredible. My line manager is always approachable, offering guidance whenever I need it. My project manager, with years of experience, has been a fantastic mentor—never too busy to share his knowledge. The whole team is very supportive, pushing me to be my best. No question is ever too silly, and I feel encouraged to continue growing and learning.
What’s next for you once you have completed your apprenticeship?
After completing my apprenticeship, I plan to pursue the Level 6 Site Management qualification. I’ve really enjoyed my time in the industry, and I’m determined to continue progressing. My goal is to reach the highest level possible, not only for my own development but also to secure a better future for my family.
