United Living has been awarded a contract by Sheffield City Council for the stage two process to design and project manage the provision of new specialist accommodation on two sites in the city – marking the second phase of Sheffield’s first council housing project in more than 30 years.

The contract will see United Living undertake preparations for the build of 140 specialist apartments and houses on two sites to the north west of Sheffield’s city centre. These new homes will be suited for older independent living and people living with support needs.

The smaller of the two sites, at Wordsworth Avenue, will accommodate eight homes together with associated external works to develop a safe and secure outdoor space for residents.

The larger Adlington Road site will accommodate 132 independent living apartments and bungalows, with an additional 8 apartments for people with support needs. This development will also include external landscaping works to provide secure garden and recreational spaces for all residents.

United Living has appointed a multidisciplinary design team to manage the project, and is partnering with specialists in the field to ensure an ergonomic and sustainable design. The project team also brings together the expertise of West and Machell Architects, structural engineers Eastwood and Partners, and Stephen A Hunt and Associates as MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) consultants.

Jo Jamieson, managing director (North) for United Living, said: “This project is hugely important for Sheffield as it will provide much-needed new, affordable homes for older people as well as those who have support needs. We’re delighted to have the opportunity to work with the council and lead on the initial stages of this development.” Janet Sharpe, Director of Housing and Neighbourhood Services at Sheffield City Council said: “We have identified a significant shortage of suitable homes in the City for older people to move into, and working with United Living offers us a fantastic opportunity to build new homes which will provide a choice of modern, self-contained accommodation for those who enjoy independent living but with care and support available for those that may need it.

These new homes will provide a great opportunity for those who value their independence but are looking for alternative accommodation that is more suited to their current or future needs”
