Working with community groups to highlight career choices in construction

 · Posted in News

Before the UK lockdown came into force, young women in Catford took part in a workshop with the goal of boosting their education, career prospects and wellbeing.

Following on from United Living’s successful Women in Construction workshops that help show the roles available in the industry and the pathways to follow, Michael Dyson Associates were inspired by the work of Catford charity, The Young Women’s Hub.

MDA joined forces with United Living’s Community Development Officer, Sharon Douglas, to offer the workshops to young women from the local community.

As part of the workshop Tracy Allen, Business Development Manager at Michael Dyson Associates, shared her journey into the construction industry, with a positive message about the many gateways that are available for the young women to pursue a career in the sector.

Tracy said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the girls, they are sharp and switched on and their interaction and questioning was brilliant. Hopefully my visit will have given them a little insight into the world of construction.”

Social Value Manager at United Living, Jacqueline Noon said: “Unless you work in construction, many people are unaware of the vast amount of jobs that are available. At United Living, we work with schools, colleges, universities and local community groups and work with all ages to highlight the career prospects the industry has.

“Ensuring we have younger generations coming into construction is vital, and we need a cross section of society in the industry including more women and those from a black and minority ethnic background, this will help the sector to be truly innovative.”

The Young Women’s Hub is a charity that provides a safe and nurturing place for girls and young women where they are provided access to opportunities for learning and development alongside alternative secondary education.
