Investing in the energy transition

The transition to net zero

The energy infrastructure system needs to undergo a transition to support the UK’s net zero ambition, whilst continuing to provide for our society’s energy needs.

At United Living, we’re investing heavily in the UK’s energy transition, by providing a broad range of solutions that contribute towards reducing carbon emissions, including:

  • Making energy systems smarter and more efficient through digitalisation
  • Reducing leakage from utility pipe networks
  • Connecting renewables and other green energy into the energy mix
  • Providing alternative heat and energy solutions such as heat networks
  • Converting waste to energy
  • Selecting low carbon manufacturing and construction technologies in our activities
  • Improving the efficiency of homes and properties

We’re committed to the emerging hydrogen and decarbonised energy sector, providing expertise across the value chain. From defining strategy and shaping technology solutions, through to complex delivery and asset optimisation. We’re working with industry and energy utilities to shape the decarbonised energy systems of the future. Our unrivalled insight and industry knowledge equips us to provide advice and practical solutions to help our customers effectively transition to a clean, green and energy efficient future.

green energy solutions

Hydrogen

Hydrogen is expected to be a significant green energy solution, providing for our industrial heat needs, dispatchable power and energy storage. In addition, hydrogen may also be used to power industrial plant, heavy goods vehicles, and public transportation, and as an alternative fuel to help us transition space heating away from solid fuels and fossil fuels like natural gas.

Carbon capture, usage and storage (CCUS)

CCUS technologies are being deployed to capture CO2 at source, gather and transport it in a safe and reliable way through pipeline infrastructure systems like those we already design, build and maintain for our clients, and either use it or sequester it underground preventing it from entering our atmosphere.

sustainable forms of gas

A cleaner, greener gas network

Biogas and biomethane are sustainable forms of gas, produced from the breakdown of organic materials such as food and farm waste. Biomethane currently accounts for only a very small proportion of the gas in our gas network, but the proportion of biomethane is set to increase in the coming years.

At United Living, we are enabling the transition to renewable and green forms of energy by helping our clients to use biogas for their energy needs, and connecting producers of biomethane to the existing gas network wherever possible.

We have been involved in the delivery of a pioneering project called Optinet for Cadent Gas, which takes gas from the gas distribution network and compresses it into the Local Transmission system.

delivering new energy solutions

District heat

We work with private and public organisations to deliver new and improved district energy solutions, and remediation of existing assets. Our services include civil work, installation of heat networks and pipework, energy centres and systems commissioning from a variety of energy sources.
